A few days ago, it was revealed by Capcom that there will be no Megaman Legends 3, a game that in development for the 3DS, and neither the game nor the prototype will bel aunched.

That shattering sound you hear are the hearts of the fans.

That explosion you hear are the fans.

The 18th/7/ 2010 marks the end of the dream of thousands of fans around the world who ever dreamt about the Megaman Legends series to be finished. The game we were waiting for more than a decade.

It was announced by Capcom that the MML3 Project will be discontinued, because it didnt fit the ´criteria´ in order for it to be further developed. Therefore, neither the game nor the prototype (which was scheduled to be released soon) will be released. All of this when the game was at a 29% of development, and has created a lot of expectation in the gaming community.

Now, you may be thinking this sort of thing happens very often, and it is true, however, there are some circumstances that you may not be aware of, but i will try to explain them shortly.

The Megaman Legends Series

Rockman DASH, or Megaman Legends (or Megaman 64, if you had a Nintendo 64, if that´s the case, poor you) was a game that released in 1997, in which the traditional 2D Side-scrolling gameplay was changed by a 3D enviroment and movement, as it was an action roleplaying game. The story took place thousand of years after the Zero series, when the world was devasted and only a few islands of land rest in a world covered by endless water... (sorry, had to say it). People must look for ancient crystals known as refractors in order to keep the civilization running. You controlled Megaman Trigger, a digger whose job is to enter the ruins in order to collect those refractors.

Now, despite of what you read, the game was good. If you played it, if you didnt love it, at least you would like it, and it was a very attractive and refreshing game to the saga. In spite of the great response of the people, the saga only had another 2 games, a direct sequel called Rockman DASH 2, or Megaman legends 2 and a spin-off prequel called The Misadventures of tron Bonne, which was protagonized by the recurring villains of the saga, the pirate family, the Bonnes. After MML2, the fans waited for 10 years always hoping that Capcom doesnt forget this game. And then, on september 29 of 2010, the fans rejoiced when it was announced that a sequel will be released, Megaman Legends 3.

Megman Legends 3 Project

So, what´s so special about this game, other than being a long awaited sequel of a great game, you ask? Its production, of course. The Megaman Legends 3 Project was infamous for being a project unique on its type in the whole history of gaming, the game development would be done with the help of the fans. If you entered the page capcom-unity.com webpage you could access to all the information with which the Devteam was working with. This consisted on letting the fans have a word on the development of the game, to decide if they liked or not the designs of the characters, making polls and design contest for some characters. It was something that could take one step further to the videogaming industry.

The 18th July of 2010, however, the Devroom of the web page where all the project was being realized published the news of the project being cancelled. They stated that the game didnt met the criteria that was needed, so the game was cancelled. The ideas and development of the game wont be used in any other projects, and it isnt expected the game will be discussed any time soon.

Possible Reasons for this Tragedy

Of course, a lot can be said from this, and there are a lot of speculation in the net, so I will try to explain you shortly.

First, let´s analyze the reasons that, according to Capcom, the project was called off.
"it was not felt that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project met the required criteria"
However, they havent explained what that criteria was, so this answer feels very unsatisfying. Now, if it true that it was very sudden, a lot of people saw it coming, not that it doesnt make it any less shocking. It was revealed a few months before that the Megaman Legends 3 game didnt have greenlit yet, and despite all the effort of the project director Mazaku Eguchi to convince the company will be a great and promising project.
Let´s also consider that this isnt the only Megaman game that was cancelled recently, a few months ago, Megaman Universe, a 2.5 platformer that would be released for the Xbox Live Arcade and the PalyStation Live Network. the March 31 of this year, it was cancelled.

It isnt also surprising that Keiji Inafune, creator of the saga, and one of the biggest figures of Capcom left the company on October of the 2010. He has even declared himelf in an interview apologizing to the fans for the news, as he hoped to participate in the game development, or at least for it to be finished.

Also, it is important to consider the position of the 3DS at the moment. The list of games for this console isnt very attractive, and 3rd parties games are lacking, while some of the best games are remakes (like StarFox 3D or LTLOZ Ocarina of Time 3d). Besides, the sales havent been going as it was expected. It has also been revealed that Assasin´s Creed: Lost Legacy for this console was cancelled.

A great ammount of people purchased the 3DS only in order to play MML3, and now they dont even have that.

This leads us to the conclusion that Capcom is afraid to invest in on the 3DS. Now, talking about the quality of lately Capcom gamas and some strategies they have taken lately is entirely into another point, and i wont enter on that field (you can always comment on in thought).

Of course, this isnt enough excuse as to cancel such a promising project. They will probably use that money to do a 100th Version of Street Fighter IV (not bad, in my opinion). A lot of people has started petition lists in order for capcom to listen to the fans so the game will be put on development again.

It is up to you to decide the reason for this, thought. I´d like to know what your opinions are of course, and any comment and question will be answered.

I will leave you the link of the Devroom page, so you can see the official statement, and all the things that the group has developed until now.
